Bosch "044" fuel pump 0-580-254-044, original equipment on the 993 GT2

Fuel Pump : Bosch 044 Motorsport

  • $0.00

--> DISCONTINUED <--

Bosch for discontinued production of the real "044"  fuel pump.

It now offers the universal "200" pump, part number 0-580-464-200.

At first glance, this appears to be an upgraded product:  15% smaller, 15% lighter, 10% more flow, internal check valve, quieter operation.
And it's a "universal fitment" design, meaning the pump is fitted to numerous different vehicles by means of inlet & outlet adapter kits (included when purchased for that vehicle application).

Not all these changes are beneficial for 911 & Turbo owners, however.

Front installation
The original front pumps measures approx. 135mm long, from the body (where the inlet hose bottoms out) to shoulder of the check valve where the banjo fitting attaches.
The new "200" pump is approx. 30mm longer (165mm) with the installed inlet & outlet adapter fittings.
The hose from the tank to the front pump must be shortened by approx. 25mm, from 90mm (original spec) down to ~65mm

On a 964/Turbo or 993/Turbo, the new diameter and length are a disadvantage:
* diameter: the -200's smaller diameter means it doesn't fit the I.D. of the original rubber pump enclosure, except with the pump's plastic spacer sleeve installed.  Even then, it is a very loose fit inside the rubber housing.
* length: the rubber enclosure's cap does not fit -- it will not not snap onto the body.
* electrical terminals:  they are now 4-5mm closer together, so they do not line up with the holes in the rubber cap.
The pump's additional length with the adapter fittings installed makes it an extremely tight fit within the fuel pump compartment beneath a 964/993 chassis.

The biggest detraction is Bosch's making the pump's inlet 40% smaller:  a small M14x1.5mm threaded inlet vs. the 044 pump's larger 18x1.5mm threaded inlet.  The consequently makes the internal diameter of the inlet adapter fitting even smaller,
On 911 applications up through 1989, this limits the pump's abililty to suck fuel fast enough and leads to:
* pump cavitation
* very noisy pump operation
* unsafe engine operation
* greatly reduced pump life

Rear Fitment on a 1978-89 930:
The original rear pump measures approx. 175mm long, and the new one is approx. 165mm with the inlet adapter fitting installed.
Installation fitment does not appear to be a problem, but we have repeatedly found the pumps noisy or very noisy when installed on the rear of a 930.

Genuine Bosch Motorsport Fuel Pump "044"

The standard, high output fuel pump for high performance Porsche cars.
Factory 993 GT2 cars use this same pump original equipment production with Porsche Part Number: 993 620 104 80.  Last known MSRP: $607.86

Applications / Notes:
1976-1994 Porsche 911 / Turbo
: Higher performance CIS or EFI engines.  Excellent for replacement of front, rear or both pumps.  The original 911-930 front pump utilizes a 12mm barbed inlet for factory push on fuel hose.  Electric terminal connections are larger M5 and M6 on the -044 pumps.  Ensuring adequate voltage supply to the pump is advised.

1995-1998 Porsche 993 / Turbo: Higher performance engines.

Specs:
172 LPH at 6.90 Bar

Suitable for use with bio fuels / ethanol

Purpose and Function:
Modern EFI fuel systems circulate as much as 200 liters per hour (~ 3 liters / min.) of fuel at pressures between 2.5 - 3.5 bar (250 - 350 kpa)  Modern electric fuel pumps are “Positive Displacement” type pumps, this means that the pump cannot produce pressure unless it is acting upon a restriction. The only restriction in the system should be the fuel pressure regulator.  The regulator controls the system pressure; the pressure ability or flow volume capacity of the fuel pump will not alter the system pressure.

Due to the high pressure and volume requirements placed upon these pumps, manufacturing tolerances are extremely fine. Motor speeds can be as high as 10,000 RPM and the clearances within the pumping elements down to microns. Cleanliness of the fuel system is vital, with an efficient high quality filter as an essential part of the fuel system.

Other Notes:
We have seen and mistakenly purchased counterfeit versions of these fuel pumps.  The non-genuine units available as found on eBay for under $200 have similar looking packaging and pump housing appearances.  We discovered through testing that production quality and reliability is not good.  Buyers beware!  TurboKraft purchases direct from only certified Bosch dealers.

For simple installation into the 911 / Turbo, 964 / Turbo, and 993 / Turbo models, see our billet metric hose adapter fittings.
